Research has found that the people who the more people dedicate their time and energy to helping others, to lift others, the more content and happier they are. But if we are continuously giving our energy to chasing our dreams and helping others, we will become burnt out very quickly. To prevent this from happening, to make sure that we are ready to give to the world, we must also reserve time to give to ourselves. I feel like mornings are the perfect time to take a step back, tune in to our inner worlds, and do things that make us feel loved and pampered.
Self-care doesn’t have to be as extravagant as having a spa day or as lengthy as taking an hour-long bath. But it could be the simple things that we do for ourselves that bring us joy, inspire us to become better, and make us feel cherished.

Self-care activities involving mindfulness practices improve concentration, focus, and memory. They help us use our brains more effectively in our everyday work by freeing it from stress and distractions.

Taking Care of That Reflection

Taking care of our outward appearance has nothing to do with vanity. But you’ll see that that when you take the time to put a little more effort into your appearance you feel more confident and self-assured.

Incorporating one or two self-care practices from each category into your morning routine will give you the perfect start to your day. They will make you feel re-centered and grounded and help you become more productive in your work. Here are some ideas for each type of self-care habits that you can practice for the perfect start to your day.

The very next morning I pulled myself out of bed when the world was asleep, made myself an amazing cup of coffee, and went to the roof of our dorm. Since then, I have never missed a sunrise.

Taking the time to be alone with our thoughts in the morning also allows us to declutter our minds and helps us focus more on our tasks for the rest of the day. For those of you who don’t know, restorative yoga is a form of yoga practice that allows the muscles of our bodies to relax deeply. These practices are different from the general trend of yoga which focuses on increasing strength and flexibility. Instead of moving from pose to pose, restorative yoga involves performing a small number of poses even in a one-hour long session.

If you actively exercise during weekdays, try filling you Sundays with a restorative yoga session to allow your body to heal from the pain it suffered during the exercise sessions. This allows us to practice stillness. It also can greatly reduce anxiety, stress, and improve symptoms of depression.

The 5-4-3-2-1 Exercise

For someone who has never meditated before, sitting on the floor in silence can be an uncomfortable thought. While I can’t stretch the amazing benefits of meditation enough, if you are someone who is not quite ready to start yet, I recommend trying the 5-4-3-2-1 exercise to practice mindfulness and ground yourself in the morning.

Sit in a comfortable spot and tune in to your surroundings. Say or write the sensations you are observing:

1. Five things you can see

I can see the cars on the street, the flower plant by my chair, people walking with umbrellas, raindrops and my little coffee cup.  

2. Four things you can feel

I feel the raindrops on my feet, elbow on the armrest, the leaves tickling my elbow, and warmth of the mug in hand.

3. Three things you can hear

I hear the sound of raindrops falling on the railing, distinct car honks, and leaves rustling.

4. Two things you can smell

I smell the caramel from my cappuccino and the wet smell of rain.

5. One thing you can taste

I taste he slightly bitter yet sweet taste of coffee. Even if you are not eating anything, there’s a taste in your mouth. Become aware of it.
