4 Types of Self-Care Habits For The Perfect Start To Your Day | Morning Routine
Research has found that the people who the more people dedicate their time and energy to helping others, to lift others, the more content and happier they are. But if we are continuously giving our energy to chasing our dreams and helping others, we will become burnt out very quickly. To prevent this from happening, to make sure that we are ready to give to the world, we must also reserve time to give to ourselves. I feel like mornings are the perfect time to take a step back, tune in to our inner worlds, and do things that make us feel loved and pampered.
Self-care doesn’t have to be as extravagant as having a spa day or as lengthy as taking an hour-long bath. But it could be the simple things that we do for ourselves that bring us joy, inspire us to become better, and make us feel cherished.
There are essentially four kinds of self-care, each of which focuses on a different part of ourselves including our soul, our mind, our bodies, and our appearance.
Feel Good Vibes
These are the acts of self-care that we do simply to make ourselves feel loved, cherished and motivated. These are my favorite kinds of self-care practices because they make you feel like your soul has been wrapped in a warm, cozy blanket.
Nourish the cells
These self-care habits involve taking care of our bodies, not just the parts of our bodies we can see, instead it refers to taking care of each cell of our being, making us feel amazing from the inside out.
Self-care activities involving mindfulness practices improve concentration, focus, and memory. They help us use our brains more effectively in our everyday work by freeing it from stress and distractions.
Taking Care of That Reflection
Taking care of our outward appearance has nothing to do with vanity. But you’ll see that that when you take the time to put a little more effort into your appearance you feel more confident and self-assured.
Incorporating one or two self-care practices from each category into your morning routine will give you the perfect start to your day. They will make you feel re-centered and grounded and help you become more productive in your work. Here are some ideas for each type of self-care habits that you can practice for the perfect start to your day.
Nourish The Cells
Drink a Glass of Lemon Water
Before you have your breakfast or coffee, fill a tall glass with warm water and squeeze the juice half a piece of lime into the water. I sprinkle in some pre-chopped mint leaves to add some freshness. Drinking lemon water will jump-start your metabolism and improve digestion. This will also help in weight loss as it increases your metabolic rate.
Give your stomach the love it deserves in the morning with a healthy and nourishing breakfast. If you don’t have the time to have a home-cooked meal every morning like me, here’s a trick that helped me retain the habit of eating a healthy breakfast every day. Cut up some fruits in a ziplock bag the night before and keep them in the fridge. You can batch make your fruit bags on the weekends if that’s what you prefer. The next morning you can pop them one these bags in the blender with some coconut milk, protein powder and a sweetener of your choice (I like to use dates) to create an enticing breakfast smoothie.
If you have a little more time in the morning, you can pour the fruit mixture into a bowl and top it with some fresh fruits, berries, nuts, and seeds to make a beautiful smoothie bowl.

Coffee with Sunrise
A year ago I read this beautifully heart-touching book called ‘Armie’. Describing the story it would take forever, but what’s relevant here is that the book was about a girl who at each day at dawn, would lie on the grass at the bank of a river that flowed near her house and watched the sunrise. The writer’s enchanting description of the sunrise was what originally inspired me to become a morning person. The very next morning I pulled myself out of bed when the world was asleep, made myself an amazing cup of coffee, and went to the roof of our dorm. The taste and smell of the fresh coffee, the warmth of the mug in my hand, and the peeking sunlight caressing my skin, it all combined into a magical experience. Since then, I have never missed a sunrise.
Taking the time to be alone with our thoughts in the morning also allows us to declutter our minds and helps us focus more on our tasks for the rest of the day. Recently I’ve been drinking the Four Sigmatic Mushroom Ground Coffee with Lions Mane. It has a rich chocolaty, earthy flavor and it doesn’t taste like mushrooms at all which is not what you’d expect. It also improves my focus and concentration. I find that I’m able to recall names and details more easily than which was unusual to me before. In addition to that, Lion’s Mane improves immunity which is something we all need at the time of this pandemic. I certainly recommend that you try it. If you are interested, click the link below.
Revisiting Your Dreams and Goals
We all need a boost of motivation, something to remind us what we are fighting for, why we are working so hard. Envisioning the life you want makes the possibility of you living that life more real and less of a fantasy.
You can create a vision board out of paper cutouts. But this can be time-consuming, so instead, you can create a Pinterest board and fill it with posts that remind you of your why, quotes that inspire you and images that help you visualize your dream life. Take 5 minutes in the morning to pop in some headphones, put on your favorite playlist and scroll through the board. This daily boost of motivation will help you keep you moving forward and be consistent with your goals even at times you feel like giving up.
For those of you who don’t know, restorative yoga is a form of yoga practice that allows the muscles of our bodies to relax deeply. These practices are different from the general trend of yoga which focuses on increasing strength and flexibility. Instead of moving from pose to pose, restorative yoga involves performing a small number of poses even in a one-hour long session.
If you actively exercise during weekdays, try filling you Sundays with a restorative yoga session to allow your body to heal from the pain it suffered during the exercise sessions. This allows us to practice stillness. It also can greatly reduce anxiety, stress, and improve symptoms of depression.
The 5-4-3-2-1 Exercise
For someone who has never meditated before, sitting on the floor in silence can be an uncomfortable thought. While I can’t stretch the amazing benefits of meditation enough, if you are someone who is not quite ready to start yet, I recommend trying the 5-4-3-2-1 exercise to practice mindfulness and ground yourself in the morning.
Sit in a comfortable spot and tune in to your surroundings. Say or write the sensations you are observing:
1. Five things you can see
I can see the cars on the street, the flower plant by my chair, people walking with umbrellas, raindrops and my little coffee cup.
2. Four things you can feel
I feel the raindrops on my feet, elbow on the armrest, the leaves tickling my elbow, and warmth of the mug in hand.
3. Three things you can hear
I hear the sound of raindrops falling on the railing, distinct car honks, and leaves rustling.
4. Two things you can smell
I smell the caramel from my cappuccino and the wet smell of rain.
5. One thing you can taste
I taste he slightly bitter yet sweet taste of coffee. Even if you are not eating anything, there’s a taste in your mouth. Become aware of it.
Taking Care of That Reflection
Create a Skincare Routine
There’s something very calming about going through your skincare routine, as you massage the products onto your face. Nothing makes me feel more relaxed and pampered than doing my skincare routine in the morning. Keep the products in a designated space in the order they are supposed to be applied to avoid decision fatigue in the morning.
If you have breakouts, acne scars or sunspots, or are trying to prevent wrinkles I highly recommend you try the TruSkin Vitamin C Serum for Face, Topical Facial Serum with Hyaluronic Acid, Vitamin E, 1 fl oz here. Even as a 23-year-old, I used to break out like a teenager, and had acne scars all over my forehead. I started using this serum 4 months ago. Within a few weeks, my breakouts stopped completely and all my scars disappeared within two months of regular use. This product was a miracle worker for me when nothing else was working on my skin. But I don’t recommend this is you have extremely dry skin, as vitamin C can irritate dry skin.
Take the Time to Get Ready
There are numerous times when I woke up in the morning and wanted to head out the door by just throwing something on and running my fingers through the bird’s nest on top of my head. Especially if you work from home, it can be extremely alluring to wake up in the morning and start working immediately in your sweatpants and bed hair. But taking the time to put a little more thought into what you are wearing and getting ready will increase your confidence and boost your mood, thus making you more productive throughout the day.
Even if you work from home, get out of your sweatpants, pop in some music to shake off the grogginess, and sit in front of the mirror. You don’t have to have a complete beauty routine, but just brushing your hair and putting on some lip balm can go a long way to signal your mind that it’s time to go to work.
I hope you found these self-care ideas helpful. If there any self-care habits you practice to make your morning enticing, do let me know in the comment below. Thanks!
